Preparing for Orientation
Everything you need to know before arriving on campus.
- Inns of Courts Assignment
As 1Ls, you are assigned to one of seven Inns of Court, named after former Supreme Court Justices, and will take all 1L classes with your Inn. You can determine your Inn by looking at sections of Torts or Contracts to which you were assigned.
During Orientation, each Court follows a unique schedule and track throughout Orientation, allowing for a more personalized experience and opportunities to connect with fellow students.

- Questions! Orientation is a great time to get answers and meet new people.
- Orientation Dress Code
Orientation attire is casual. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, as you may be walking between sessions and spending extended periods of time on campus. Some spaces can be cool, so bringing a light sweater or jacket is encouraged.
- Required Summer Readings
This year we are asking incoming students to read two readings before the start of orientation.
Reading #1:
This year we are asking incoming students to read the introduction to Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, before the start of orientation. This brief reading will provide the foundation for a workshop about client communication.

Reading #2:
In addition, a professor will lead a mock class during orientation next week in order to help you understand the classroom environment and how to prepare for class. Please be sure to have read your respective case - specified by Inn - below prior to the session.

- Physical Accommodations
If you will need accommodations to fully participate in 1L Orientation, please complete Orientation Accommodation form as soon as possible.
- Parking
We recommend parking at the University Student Center located on 800 21st Street, NW (Entrance on H Street near 21st Street). Parking is not free and you can review the rates here.
- Additional Guests at Orientation
Orientation programs are intended for incoming students unless otherwise noted.
