Transfer Students - Technology Information

August 3, 2021

Greetings,

We hope this message finds you well. This message contains important information related to 1) coming to campus, 2) the Admissions Office, and 3) an overview of the technologies available to you as a GW law student.

Covid 19 Testing and GWorld Cards

All students should schedule their first Covid 19 test upon returning to campus and before the start of orientation and classes. Your GWorld card, which gives you access to all the law school buildings, cannot be activated until the Covid 19 test is completed. The test itself takes minutes, and an appointment can be made on the Colonial Health website at  https://mychc.gwu.edu by clicking the Appointments button. When you make an appointment, please be sure to use it, as there are many students returning to campus in need of a Covid 19 test. Also, you need not wait until the day you return to campus to make an appointment; appointments for testing are available now.

Admissions Office and Financial Aid

As you arrive on campus, please note that the Admissions and Financial Aid Office is currently under construction. They look forward to serving you in person soon; in the meantime, they look forward to serving you virtually.  If there is anything you need, please contact them at (202) 994-7230, inatGWatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] edu (inatGW[at]law[dot]gwu[dot]edu), or finaidatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] edu (finaid[at]law[dot]gwu[dot]edu).

Journal Competition Info Update

Attached to this email is an updated version of the Journal Competition Basics document.  The update is to inform students choosing to compete in the upcoming write-on competition that the date for ranking journals has been extended to Friday, August 27th at 11:59 PM EDT.

Technology Overview

You can get a head start on your semester by taking care of some technology-related tasks before you even arrive. For your convenience, this information and related video tutorials are also available online by visiting the Technology @ GW Law: Info For New Students website. Should you encounter account or other technology issues please email  lawITatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] edu (lawIT[at]law[dot]gwu[dot]edu).

GWID

For certain services and transactions at GW you will be asked to provide your GWID.  This is a 9-character identifier beginning with a G.  The admissions office provided you with this information.  If you do not know your GWID you can obtain it here by expanding the GWID section and selecting GWid Retrieval Request.

GW NetID & Email Accounts

You have one username which we refer to as a GW NetID.  When you claim your GW NetID and select a password a university email (NetIDatgwu [dot] edu (NetID[at]gwu[dot]edu)) will be generated along with a law school email address (NetIDatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] edu (NetID[at]law[dot]gwu[dot]edu)).

To log into your law school-specific systems, you will use your law school email address (NetIDatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] edu (NetID[at]law[dot]gwu[dot]edu)).  Access to all law school-specific systems can be obtained from your law school Google Apps menu on the top right of your inbox.  We have prepared two instructional videos for your use:

Law School Email

It is very important that you are able to check your law school email account (@law.gwu.edu). Announcements regarding classes and events are frequently sent there. We recommend that you forward your @gwu.edu email to your @law.gwu.edu email.

Law School Portal [aka MyLaw]

MyLaw is an information portal that will be used by your professors and the school to distribute information about your courses.  Once you are registered on August 18, this will include your first week's reading assignments and syllabi. You will access the MyLaw Portal via your law school Google Apps menu or by going to my.law.gwu.edu. This is explained in the video "Law School Portal".

Wireless

When you are on campus, you can use the wireless configuration utility on your specific device to connect to the internet.  The name of the wireless network is GWireless.  Most devices will simply ask you to provide your NetID and password to connect. When you are physically on campus you can easily set up wireless.

Software

Select software and business apps are available to all students at The George Washington University.  A complete list with download information is available on the GW Information Technology website.

Text Book Discounts

Publishers are offering a discount code on print and electronic textbooks for Fall 2021.  The info is published here  https://law.gwu.libguides.com/AIT/discounts

Registration for Online Research Services

On Tuesday, August 17th, you will receive an email, to your law school email, from the Jacob Burns Law Library with the subject "Registration Information for Library Research Accounts."  This email provides instructions to register your GWLaw assigned Lexis+, Westlaw Edge, Bloomberg Law, and CALI accounts.  Your individual registration codes will be embedded in the instructions.  Support contacts for all four accounts are provided in the email.

For Westlaw Edge, when you go to the OnePass account creation process there should be a note for transfer students with a link to the instructions for saving and transferring folders from your Westlaw Edge account registered through your previous school.

We provide this information to you well in advance of the Transfer Journal Competition as it is run through TWEN.  More importantly, we encourage you to register your accounts at your earliest opportunity to have these set up in advance of the beginning of the semester and the journal competition, should you choose to participate.

The library contact for assistance with these accounts and other research databases available through the library is electronicservicesatlaw [dot] gwu [dot] libanswers [dot] com (electronicservices[at]law[dot]gwu.libanswers.com).

Printing

The Law School participates in Colonial Printing, a pay-for print service with many locations in the school and on campus. Colonial Printing is also referred to as WEPA.  You can visit the guide on printing for more information. This is explained in the videos on "Colonial Printing".

Scanning

Scanners are located on Lower Level 1 (LL1).  Scanned jobs may be downloaded to a USB drive, sent to your @law.gwu.edu or other email address, or captured by your smartphone or tablet computer. There is no charge for scanning.

Scanner use is heavy the first few weeks of the semester.  A mobile app for scanning is an alternative. The Library recommends the free AdobeScan app.
